The mission of the Historic Preservation Commission is “to transform community landmarks into civic spaces; to preserve historic artifacts and memories; and to promote and celebrate the history and heritage of Henry County and its people”.

Brief description: Located in the former Saunders Elementary School building [NW of Mount Pleasant's Square], the museum offers displays and memorabilia featuring Saunders School, Henry County Rural Schools, the Dr. James Van Allen family, Mount Pleasant, Henry County Veterans and all the towns and townships of the County. The Donald Young Memorial Library and Research Center houses Henry County books, maps, photos, postcards and genealogical files for historical research.
Hours: Saturday afternoons [1-4], May through October, and any other time by appointment.

Lewelling Quaker Museum -
Physical Address: 401 South Main Street P.O. Box 245 Salem, Iowa 52649
Brief Description: The Henderson Lewelling home and Museum is a National Park Service Underground Railroad “Network to Freedom” historic site. Visitors to the museum receive a guided tour from a volunteer docent who will present the history of the abolitionist work of the Salem Quaker community in the lead up to the civil war. As a safe house or station on the network the home features secretive hiding spaces where freedom seekers were concealed to avoid capture by bounty hunters. The museum is a National Park Service passport stamp site. More about the Network to Freedom at www.nps.gov/ugrr.
Hours: Open for tours 1 to 4 p.m., Sundays from May through September or by appointment at 319-258-2000. School class tours can be arranged consistent with school schedules.

Swedish American Museum -

Brief Description: Discover the story of Swedish immigration through exhibits in four buildings. Also contains a coffee shop, gift shop, and library containing genealogical and historical materials.
Hours: 9am – 4pm January-March open Thursday, Friday, Saturday
April-December open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday

Winfield Museum -

Brief Description: Displays include a reproduction of Erikson's Toyland, a toy store open in the 1050s - 1960s, plus much local memorabilia. This museum was named after General Winfield Scott.

The Dover Museum and Depot -

Brief Description: Two floors of exhibits relating to the New London-Lowell area. Restored railroad depot with train memorabilia. Genealogical, cemetery, and historical records are also available.

  Harlan - Lincoln House -
Physical Address: Iowa Wesleyan College 101 West Broad Street Mount Pleasant, IA 52461
Brief Description: James Harlan was an Iowa Wesleyan College presiden, U.S. Senator, and friend of President Lincoln. His daughter Mary was married to the President's son, Robert. Their three children spent summers here.
